I'm a documentary filmmaker wondering if anyone has explored distribution through former newspapers/magazines that are now online new orgs? I know The Guardian in the UK has stepped into this arena, as well as the New York Times. Anyone know of others? And, for those who have distributed this way, am I right in assuming any pay is a smaller token amount? I'm also a journalist and am surprised more news organizations haven't gone this route, though many are struggling financially. Thoughts anyone?
So, 1) I didn't know news publications sponsored docs - thanks for sharing! 2) Looked up NYT, and that's frickin' cool!
Here are the FAQ: https://www.nytimes.com/2018/04/30/opinion/about-op-docs.html
And the application, in case anyone was wondering: https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2018/05/04/opinion/opdocs-submission...
3) The description of the amount for NYT says a modest stipend once complete, and if need be, you can maybe get a grant to help finish the film. That being said, it's also only for 5-10min docs, so there should be a minimal production budget.
But definitely scroll through this lounge - LOTS of resources are shared in this lounge! There is also lots of info about funding in the Financing Lounge, too: https://www.stage32.com/lounge/fundraising
Sorry to be slow in thanking you for sharing this info (my parents’ place was hit by a tornado right after I started this post! All are okay.) I do think we will see more of this in the future. We all need to encourage news organizations so they provide another outlet! I do think we need to receive at least modest pay so we don’t devalue our work.
I hadn't heard of that, but it seems an interesting and potentially good fit.
