Hi all,
Was wondering if anyone had experience pursuing government film grants in the genre space? If the point of a specific grant is to show off the geography of a region and boost tourism, would film commissioners be completely against horror films right off the bat? The obvious answer to me is "yes, duh", but you never know with these things so I thought I'd ask around.
The obvious answer right off in 'no! duh'. If the intent is to show off the benefits and beauty pf a region to attract tourism, why would I concentrate on 'horror' - makes no sense to me.
I’m wondering about it too, coz I’m an horror producer. But I think, if you show the area where you are filming, it doesn’t matter. Tourists wants to visit where the movies are filmed anyway!
Mmmm... It doesn't seem to me that horror affects this negatively. The Overlook Hotel's exterior in The Shining is represented by the Timberline Lodge at Mt. Hood in Oregon. I think that attracts more people than it deters people.

I believe different regions have different rules/checkboxes that would approve the grant. Not necessarily the genre of the film. Example in Canada you require writer, director, actor, location etc to all add up to a certain number of 'points' in order to apply for film tax credits.
According to my understanding, in my country it doesn't matter the genre, you are eligible for a rebate if you spend a certain amount of money and/or hire local talent.

We have film grants over here but they don't select projects via genre..."artistic view" is important, backing from co-productions, and most of all - good ties...
Good luck with the film grants - and, no, I don't think horror or genre affects the distribution of grant funds.
Amazing insights everyone. Thanks for all your replies- they were super helpful!
