Screenwriting : Should I get a refund? by Travis Macready

Should I get a refund?

Hey guys, long time no see. Been hunkering down writing scripts. I wanted to get one more look at my script and get some actionable notes, so I decided to get some coverage. As a preface, I wouldn't care if I got a pass, but what I received IMO just seems REALLY off for some reason. No actionable notes for me to read and consider, etc.

I noticed there was really bad grammar throughout the coverage and very odd wording. They kept talking on and on about me trying to be WOKE just because I have diverse characters of different races?

Maybe I'm crazy, who knows. I paid $119 so I'm seeking some advice. I'll post the coverage in here if possible or to anyone whose willing to give it a look and see if I'm crazy or not.

Here's a paragraph from the coverage: "That's not to say that the supporting cast is generic because the writer has also been paying

attention to woke Hollywood by adding a targeted range of diversity who simply hit their marks

and deliver their lines to keep Harry moving forward in his nightmarish journey."

Danny Manus

thats some bullshit coverage clearly written by someone outside of LA and outside of Hollywood. I would suggest not getting Coverage, which normally has few specific actionable suggestions, and instead spring for professional NOTES by someone who is not anonymous, and has real hollywood experience. happy to help over at No BullScript, but there are many who could give better notes than that!

Lyndon Booth

Haha oh man, yeah, get that refund. Anyone who uses WOKE in your feedback absolutely sucks.

I had to get a refund once when a reader was just so off the mark compared to previous readers. It really is a crapshoot when it comes to who reads your work. $119, ouch!

Coupla months ago I saw a Blacklist ad asking for script readers worldwide...now I dunno that applies for script consulting, but if it does pretty good chance some Malaysian guy, Ethiopian or even someone from Macedonia's reading and giving u notes...bad English certainly applies there :)

I never pay for any type of consulting (when I want it)...If notes come back as BS, at least I got it free of charge...

Hi Tripp, was this coverage through Stage 32? If so, please contact j.mirch@stage32.com so we can look into the reader and provide you with a refund.

I've paid for coverage added to competition entries and didn't understand at first that no, you won't get coverage from the actual judges. One even told me I should include details not possible for that time period, and in general everything was off there. We're all learning lessons, with experience, and I agree with Danny Manus from now on - will only get coverage when I know the name of the industry professional, which is what we can do through Stage 32. I have my next one picked out, if I can just focus and finish my latest script lol!

Travis Macready Another example of the perverse and pathological industry that has grown up around extracting money from aspiring screenwriters. Considering only your comment, I would definitely ask for my money back as the political or social viewpoint of the reader is not an acceptable part of the process . Coverage is not for notes. It is for (too lazy to read & too gutless to make their own decisions) junior execs to decide whether to consider something or not. If you are seeking critique, your best best is to network with accomplished writers whose skills you trust, and maybe some of them will give you their honest opinions.
