Film Networking

Don't take this post the wrong way. Yes, there are some negatives to "film networking". But the end of the story is how to DO IT RIGHT! And here at Stage 32, you are in a lot better hands. So this is more for our noob friends.

Thanks for sharing Brian Onley Onward and upward.

Newbies & wannabies - PAY ATTENTION TO THIS. This is how real 'networking' works in the real (reel) world. Go out & meet people face-to-face. REALLY!

That's a really irritating video - the cartoon voice is, to me, like nails on a chalkboard. The fact that this person has 10,000 subs is very revealing; that many people trying to "break in" to the industry think she has something unique to say!

I will say, based on her IMDb, she's "broken in" to the industry in a solid, sustainable way. But then to try to parlay that experience into a paying gig (services), taking advantage of noobs? If she really wanted to help people break in, she wouldn't be mercenary with her advice. This sort of opposite of what's she's preaching about networking.

She does speak the truth about networking: it's about relationships, even, dare I say, FRIENDSHIPS! If her networking was effective, she'd be "networking" with people who are more newbie than her, not charging them money.

Get on-set, work hard, be professional, give more than take - these are "The 4 Secrets of Breaking In!

Look at Shane Stanley's example, his career path (and there are many more examples, he's just who I thought of first).

As always, just my opinion.

Always wise to be yourself!

John - what she's doing is what I do for free. Recently I've become aware (it was brought to my attention) nobody believes/takes seriously the knowledge/wisdom that I offer unless I charge money for it. Why should I waste my time?

John Ellis

Doug, you've got a great heart. Isn't that what real mentoring is about? The people who will take your wisdom seriously without paying for it are the only ones worth mentoring.

In the weird contrariness of humans, I've found that once they fork over their cash, your value to them goes down! So now I just work with people who appreciate my contributions regardless of dollars.
