On Writing : New Npvel by John Roane

New Npvel

I've just finished Black Lion with a Red Heart and about to send it to my publisher. That won't' be the end of it because my editor will have something to say.

Next novel will be: Break My Heart of Glass (?????)

A prominent Houston plastic surgeon is nearing middle age and is on top of the world. He has a trophy wife and lots of money, but he questions his state of happiness. Just appointed Chief of Surgery. More money and prestige. After finishing his surgery schedule, an FBI agent comes to his office and tells him a cartel killer on death row is his biological son. The killer requests a meeting through his lawyer. The news hits the media and the doctor's professional and personal life begin to fall apart. The meetings with his son start out angry and adversarial, but develops into a relationship. He attends his son's execution. Afterward, driven by guilt and despair, as well as thoughts of what could have been, he goes in search of the woman, the mother of his son. His quest leads him down to Reynosa on the Texas/Mexican border and the dark world of the cartels and sex trafficking. He is in over his head. Only the help of surprise friends and the resurrection of past Army skills will save his life.

Lots of violence.

Does this fly?

Sorry. I misspelled novel. It was not a new genre.

Hi John, this sounds very exciting to me! I think leaning into the background of the mother and the relationship to the surgeon will be important. Was it a one night stand? A love that was lost? etc.

Interesting!

Great to hear! Starting up on my next novella, waiting to hear back on my audiobooks and have my first paperback release coming in the next couple of weeks.

Shellie: Many years ago, a trip down to the border and over the Rio Grande to Mexico was fun. It was also reasonably safe. You followed the rules. I'm a big fan of Mariachi music and ever bar had a great band. Cold beer and great music made a great weekend. I love bar-b-que goat. I won't delve into the other pleasures available there. My character goes down to Reynosa for a weekend of drinking. He's a freshman medical student and wants to blow off steam. He meets a girl at the Texas Cabaret. She is available but she is very shy. It is her first night of work in the bar. He says he just wants to talk to her. She is beautiful and smart, not the kind of person one would expect to find in boys' town. He returns a few weeks later, they begin a relationship, and he falls in love. She is vulnerable and he is concerned. The weekend trips are stressful and he decides to sneak her into Texas. They make a plan but she is discovered. When he returns to implement the plan, a friendly bartender tells him to run for his life. The men who control the sex trade have taken her away and plan to make an example of him. He runs for his life and never returns. He is afraid and goes on with his life, but his abandonment of her haunts him. I have a lot of what ifs and whys to work out. If you see any plot holes let me know.
