Depends - if you are trying to produce it, it depends on what you are producing. If you are selling it - anyone who buys the kind of film you have written is the right one.
Great question Al! You definitely want a producer who is a champion of the project and sees the vision. Someone who is also looking to be a partner and collaborator versus one who is just looking to sell the material to a studio. Do you have a script you are looking to attach a producer to?
Al Fenderico What is your purpose for "attaching" a producer? Again, to sell the project to a studio, or to create the project and get it to market? The former means you reach out to every producer and production company you can find. The latter means, in fact, YOU are the producer and you are looking for an experienced producer to either champion the project with you or take your orders in putting it together. These are two different, though similar functions and any producer who is worth their salt will want to own part of the project if they are going to champion it. As Sam says, in either case you need someone who loves the project and I will add, like you personally, because ultimately you must work together. In finding such a person, first, be wary of any producer who charges you to look at your script. Those people are not legit by definition (and the Independent Producers Guild prohibits 'pay-to-pitch'). (That's different than paying a line producer or UPM to create a budget and schedule - those are legit services you have to pay for if you cannot do them youself). Second, try the job section here, with a call for a producer. You might find someone there. Otherwise, network, network, network. The IIPG has several producers and I am represented by Legio XIII Imprimatur
