Hello everyone, I am a screenwriter and I am thinking to publish my screenplay as book format (Not as a novel, yet) as a selfpublisher because it is becoming difficult to find productions, do you think it is a bad idea?
KDP (Kindle) is free. But I don’t think producers will be looking to Kindle for screenplays to purchase. I don’t think people that read books on Kindle read screenplays. I don’t think it is a super effective market approach.
Hi Al, what would be the goal of publishing the screenplay? Would you be rewriting it to a book format, or are you just thinking about publishing it in the screenplay form?
Al....don't bother publishing on Amazon Kindle unless you intend to spend a lot promoting it on Amazon. They don't show your book to users unless you pay for it. Jeff Bezos is no dummy, he charges for everything. You probably already know about "The Black List".
Al, you can certainly publish a screenplay, as a book (at least 100 printed pages) on Amazon Kindle, and this is free. You can order copies of the book at wholesale (you being the author), for under 4 dollars per book. If you buy up 20 books, you can send them around. To whom? Networks and production companies will NOT read it. They all have policies to not view unsolicited scripts/screenplays. You can send quiery emails, with a brief synopsis, and maybe one or two will request to see a script. Most don't like attachments or links (they fear computer viruses) so a "book" might be a good option. Without an agent, it is almost impossible to "pitch" a script to a network or production company. How to get an agent? You can email William Morris and CAA and find lists of agents. Any agent who asks for money up front, is a sham. You "may" get an agent this way, but do NOT send them your script. Query email only with no attachments! They must ask for it first, and this is a firm rule. Query email only: short and sweet. Hope this helps.
Sure, some guys actually do this, but for the scripts already been produced...there's this whole under-genre mostly common for Europe and Asia sometimes referenced as "Lesscenario" - scripts intentionally made to be read rather than be filmed...
Al, if you mean turn your book into an actual novel, then I say go for it. It makes for a fast-paced novel and writing a book is a good way to hone your writing skills, but be warned--it's difficult to switch to past tense :) IF that's what you're doing then be sure to self publish for free on Smashwords. It's free and they distribute to all e-reader companies like Apple and Barns &Noble. If you do Amazon you'll have two choices of distribution. Choose the one with less royalties, otherwise you will be contractually stuck with only Amazon.
Otherwise, it's just for fun. Maybe you could peddle it to your social media as "Screenplay book," but as Craig said, It's unlikely anyone in the industry will read it.
Hi Al, the comments here are all in the same vein, and correct. Publishing a screenplay in the script format is not something that's done in the industry as there's really no use for it. No person or company accepts unsolicited material. It's much easier to get people who do want to read your script an electronic copy. So make sure you are using the proper screenplay format and software.
I suggest you reach out to our team at success@stage32.com. Let us know what you're working on and what your goals are. It is difficult to sell indie books, let alone Screenplays, Al. Is there any market for such?Where would you sell them? I don't know anyone that reads screenplays in book form.

Back it is not going to hurt you. So why not.
