As a writer, do you allow your characters to tell their own stories or do they allow you to interpret the story they want you to tell? I’m asking because I find myself allowing my characters to speak and tell their own stories.

Kirsty Louise Joyce

Hey Josiah, interesting question..... my 'default' position would be to interpret my character stories on the page. However, I have also had characters talking to me (as weird as that sounds, but I'm sure fellow writers can relate to this). I do try and put myself into the 'body' of each character to understand their motivations on a deeper level.

Craig D Griffiths

Josiah, my belief is that if a character stops, the story stops. Therefore their actions/decision/desires/etc build the story. Therefore by extension, they are telling the story.

Dan MaxXx

I just like making shit up, use tools of the story trade (setup & payoff, foreshadowing, mcguffins), pray my concepts connect with strangers in the business of making movies. That's it.

Pamela White

In # 1 it was a teamwork effort with some of the characters. We were merged together as I wrote. So we contributed to the storyline. We speak the same language so we didn't need any interpretation.

Norma Padro

I write short story books. I tell the story about the characters. This works best for me right now.
