Time travel is a topic I tend to stare clear of, as there are always debates around how it works, plausibility, time line disturbances, etc. However, I am working on a project where time travel is essential to the plot, so I'm curious--how do you write an effective time travel screenplay? (I've done a fair share of research already, but any books, TedTalks, movie suggestions, etc. about time travel would be greatly appreciated).

I think, because time travel is nothing more than theory at the moment, you should feel free to make up any kind of rules you want for it.

Timeline, Somewhere In Time, Star Trek The Voyage Home, The Final Countdown ... all movies with time travel. In each you're shown how the get back in time, and what's at stake if they fail.

you can use time travel as a metaphor for the collision of people of different cultures in one time.

I completely agree with Nathan, you are writing in your world so you make the rules.

This is my rule to writing time travel stories: make clear how your time travel works. Set the rules. The thing that I have notice with time travel plots used in movies is that each time travel theory is slightly different because that theory is supposed to serve the overall story. For example: Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure - time travel is used to transplant historical figures into our time and are brought back once they have served their purpose to the main protagonists. This evidently does not effect the history of these figures but if Bill and Ted actively do something to effect their personal history, things can change. Nonsensical? Yes but the rules are clear that this is a far fetched comedy so audience are lenient. Compare to Tenet, almost like in any original Nolan movie, the story takes a good 20 mins or so to explain the rules to the audience so they understand how it effects the main characters and what perils they will face if they try to break those rules. All this to say to you is don't worry about criticism to your time travel plot because chances are someone in the ether will find some holes to poke. Remember this is about the story, your character and the journey... those things are what all shine the most.

just do what you is comfortable with doing. I, myself, always wanted to venture into that category, but I'm not capable of it right now. other scripts to write first. always remember that it's your story, and you have control how it happens. it's good to see how others identify it through their own films, but you make it your own. I would love to see it in the theaters one day. congrats and good luck with it

Thank you all for the thoughtful responses. This was really helpful.
Hi all! If you are looking for a travel destination, I recommend visiting Indonesia. But first of all, you must get an Indonesia visa to spend your time as comfortably as possible. I spent two weeks in Bali this year. I want to share my impressions about surfing. If you love extreme sports and water sports, then this is the place for you. Surfing in Bali is incredibly fun. The best beaches for surfing, in my opinion, are Kuta and Uluwatu. The waves there are simply amazing! Don't forget to rent a board and try yourself in this exciting sport. Good luck!
