Introduce Yourself : Career Transitions and Informational Interviews by Jill Laing

Career Transitions and Informational Interviews

I've been enjoying my experience at Stage 32. I transitioned my career in 2022 and have been receiving great support from the community here. I have a lot to learn, so if anyone has information on transitioning from author to screenwriter/producer, I would like to conduct an informational interview with you.

Does anyone have a favorite conference or in-person event they attend for networking with folks in film/tv industry?

Maurice Vaughan

Hi, Jill. Interviewing a screenwriter/producer is a great way to learn about transitioning from author to screenwriter/producer! You might want to also check the Screenwriting Lounge (www.stage32.com/lounge/screenwriting) and Producing Lounge (www.stage32.com/lounge/producing).

Good to meet you, Jill! I come from a theatre and production background, so my perspective is the other way around - I tend to think screenplay first and expanded world/inner-world of a novel second.

I second Maurice's suggestion! We actually have an Authoring Lounge as well, if you'd like to chat with other authors who may be struggling with the same transition: https://www.stage32.com/lounge/playwriting

My two cents - just get started. Write the thing as a screenplay, submit it for feedback (whether in a class setting or a-la-carte script services), and learn by doing. If good writing is rewriting, then jump in! As the co-host of The Coverage Report, I would also like to humbly invite you to join us there - Mondays at 6pm PST! You will read others' work and give feedback and in exchange you'll receive feedback on your own. Pretty rad!

Here's my recent blog about it: https://www.stage32.com/blog/why-feedback-on-your-screenplay-synopsis-is...
