Screenplay/Film fund Comps?

Hey everyone, I've posted this in a different lounge but looking for any advice from filmmakers too: I'm pretty new to this, I've written a first draft of a short, a final draft of a short, a few micros and I'm currently half way theough and animation feature. I'm just wondering if anyone has any experience in screenplay competitions and whether they're worth it? I'm thinking of submitting to the Shore Scripts short film fund competition. Not expecting to win or anything but it would be nice to know if others do this. TIA

Hi Adam: I would say no, don't bother. You work in the biz and on set so you know creatives with gear and experience. I would get one of your shorts made independently and use that credit for your next step. Although I like this site and have made some great connections, money seems to be the driving force behind pitch sessions and contests. If you pay $100 to enter a contest and don't get noticed - you're out $100. If you get one of your own scripts made into a film, you have credibility, a showreel and can send it to festivals. Have a great day.

Hey Adam Shatwell! I'm a big fan of the stage 32 competitions, we have a proven track record of success and I've worked with some of the judges personally so I know from first-hand experience that they're here to mentor and find great projects. Generally speaking, do your research. There are great opportunities with contests, but always look at who the judges are, what you're getting if you win, and what has happened with the previous winners.

Hey Chris! I agree with you that Adam's great experience means that he is already ahead of many other people trying to find success for their projects, but that doesn't mean contests can't help! The goal, as I'm sure you would agree, is to get as much great material as you can in circulation to as many people as possible, and contests can absolutely help with that.

Hey Adam! Everyone has pretty strong opinions about contests in the screenwriting world. What it really boils down to is doing your research, asking your network (like you are now!), and targeting the contests that benefit you in the ways that you want. I totally get where Chris is coming from, and there are a lot of writers that feel contests are a waste. I believe that stems from the massive quantity of contests out there compared to the number of contests of quality and people are generally disheartened by entering contests and not getting what they want out of them. We're human, we all get down when we get no's no matter how thick-skinned we are. My suggestion is prepare the best you can on your side so you enter contests that matter to you. And yes, I will suggest Stage 32 contests because I believe in what they offer. And of course, you're here! We work VERY hard to get the best judges and guarantee actual meetings with them to tangibly affect your writing and career.

Thanks everyone for your advice, definitely given me food for thought! I really appreciate it!
