Hi Everyone, I am a long time film industry technician, musician and writer. I recently received excellent feedback from a pitch, a good score and a pass. I am pitching a transmedia production; which includes a stage musical script, A musical screenplay and a podcast, all revolving around the same story. Within the review, I am not sure what the producer means by the following sentence; ... "I would advise you to approach a production company or director who specializes in musicals. These can be challenging to sell without underlying IP or being based on a true story but with experienced musical producers or a musical director you would have the best chance"... perhaps someone can help me understand what she means by "without underlying IP". Thanks. Have a great networking day everyone!

Hi Blair J Hebert - its great to meet you here in the community. Just as a straight definition, "underlying IP" means existing intellectual property, like a book or a graphic novel or an article in a magazine. It's source material that already exists - and in a perfect world has a built in audience - that you've gotten the rights to with the intention of developing as a film or TV show or musical. A few examples... the book GONE WITH THE WIND was the underlying IP for the movie, the comic book series WATCHMEN was the underlying IP for that limited series, and the movie SOME LIKE IT HOT is the underlying IP for the current Broadway musical. In many cases, it makes it an easier investment because there is awareness for the title or story and without having that it can be more challenging, especially in today's marketplace where awareness is a big asset (thus all the sequels and Broadway shows based on movies, etc.). Hope that's helpful.

Thank you Sam. I wonder if the Sputnik event would be significant enough for a modern audience to glom onto. It is most certainly has name recognition as does Radio Girl. Thanks for your input.
