OTT & Transmedia : Writing tool 3# by Ugo Cavallo

Ugo Cavallo

Writing tool 3#

Well well well... halloween is approaching, how about a new tool to practice your writing?

This exercise can be applied to any medium but is mainly useful for documentary writers. It's a somewhat difficult exercise but after doing it a couple of times, you'll notice how much progress it will make you make in your writing.

How does it work?

Take a news story from a newspaper in your city, your region or a radio news story (the news can be of any type, from crime news to the news that made you smile), write this news down on a piece of paper. This will be your ending (or resolution), your task as authors is to start from this event and go backwards and write all the events that may have led to the ending of your story.

V2

Do you like challenges?

If you want, you can take the news story you have chosen and choose to put it in the first act, as a catalyst for your story. At this point all you have to do is write the consequences...

Happy writing, see you soon.

Yours, Hugo.

Great exercise, Ugo Cavallo! I always outline from the start. I'm gonna find a news story and try this exercise. Probably with a commercial or short script. Thanks.

This works for screenwriters as if you find yourself stuck, you can go from the end back, checking how each scene came about from the previous one.
