Introduce Yourself : Writer, Editor, and Creative Strategist by Erik Rhey

Erik Rhey

Writer, Editor, and Creative Strategist

Hi everyone. I'm a somewhat new screenwriter (I've been at it about three years), partially transitioning from media, publishing, and fiction writing. I came up as a journalist, and I currently work for CNN creating short-form documentaries and articles, digital interactives, and so on. I've written two novels and who knows how many articles and short stories. It's great to be part of Stage 32 and see such diversity in this talented community, including age, ethnicity, location, vocation, and background.

Hi, Erik Rhey. Hope you're doing great. How long is a short-form documentary?

Billy Kwack

Hi Erik, you work for WB wow. What genre are your novels?

Erik Rhey

Hi. Maurice. Our short-form films are probably shorter than you think—typically 2-3 minutes, which online became a sweet spot. It’s challenging to tell a story in 3 minutes but it’s also a fun creative exercise.

Wow, Erik Rhey. I didn't think they'd be that short. It is challenging to tell a story in 3 minutes. I've written 3-minute short scripts -- and commercials, which are even shorter -- but like you said, it's a fun creative exercise. There's no time to waste in a 3-minute film.

Hi Erik Rhey - it’s great to meet you here in the community. Happy IYW! it sounds challenging to tell a story in 2-3 minutes. What are some of the subjects you’ve explored in your short-form docs?
