I have always had a thing for the underdog, so when I read about Robert Smalls, the enslaved, half black young man who stole a confederate gunship and sailed his crew and all their families to the Union Blockade and freedom, I knew I wanted to write about him. I created an Period Action Script based on 10 years of his life, starting prior the Civil War.
The process was completely different than how I normally write. The research was intense. Dialogue took me a while to figure out. I had no idea where to end the story.
I just entered it in Stage 32 Period competition and wondering how I should pitch it? I think Historical, every character is correct, the timeline is correct, I created scenes and dialogue.
What do you think?

Your Robert Smalls script sounds exciting, John Scimeca! Maybe pitch it as a Historical/Drama or a Biography/Historical/Drama.
