Screenwriting : A Stage32 executive walks into a bar... by Matthew Kelcourse

Matthew Kelcourse

A Stage32 executive walks into a bar...

...and reads a grounded, post-apocalyptic sci-fi through S32 coverage I wrote and they truly enjoyed it. So much he said I should make it a limited series because he wants to know more about everything and the only way would be a streaming limited series. Gauntlet down. So, nothing fancy - I took the first 12 pages of a 120 page feature and worked those pages into a one-hour pilot episode that has now made the finals (top 3) of The Bolt competition (Barnstorm Media).

One writer of the 3 finalists will be chosen to receive the grand prize of Barnstorm Media producing and filming the winning pilot, get an executive producer credit, and keep all rights to the script and the filmed pilot.

So, although I'm not naive enough to think rewriting 12 pages into a pilot episode has a chance, it'll make for some great daydreams for a while, and I'll look forward to tying again next year :-)

Glad the exec enjoyed your script, Matthew Kelcourse! Congratulations on being top 3! Turning pages of a feature into a limited series. I might try it one day. Thanks for the idea!

Sarah Jane Mc Carthy

That was a great idea Matthew Kelcourse well done on taking the initiative!

This is fantastic. I agree with Nick, please keep us posted.

So instead of writing one complete story, this exec suggested to write multi-stories for multiple episodes? Why switch storytelling from easiest execution to hardest, on and off the page? Tv series is hardest.

Hanna Arley

Wow, congrats! Wish the best for you and, definitely keep us posted!

Wendy Appelbaum

Good luck! I hope it works out for you :)

Does this mean that "Media Distributors" want more serial content?

Is this an industry shift?
