Introduce Yourself : Stage 32 screenwriter and old timer by John Richard Sullivan

John Richard Sullivan

Stage 32 screenwriter and old timer

I'd just like to say hi to everyone and hope you all are doing well in your lives and careers. I've got several irons in the proverbial fire. My writing interests run the gamut from historical to sci-fi to pulp horror. Speaking of which, if anyone is interested in helping to develop a 70s-period giallo horror film set in Italy and adapted from a short story by Bram Stoker for under 10 mm, hit me up. :-) I also have some more sci-fi stuff in the writing stage. Keeping busy!

Maurice Vaughan

Hey, John Richard Sullivan. I'm doing great. Hope you are too. What's Pulp Horror?

Leonardo Ramirez

Glad you're keeping busy John Richard Sullivan - good to see you. Happy IYW!

John Richard Sullivan

Thanks Leonardo Ramirez! And to you too! :-)

John Richard Sullivan

Hey Maurice! I guess I'm showing my age a bit with "pulp horror", but the term goes back to publications like Weird Tales and Eerie comics and Tales from the Crypt. It can also apply to some of my favorite film subgenres like vintage Hammer films, 70s giallo, and 60s Italian gothic films, especially the ones starring Barbara Steele. I guess it's the opposite of what is now called "elevated horror", but as that term is fairly general, I suppose it could include stories that are a bit more pulpy. I also like horror and sci-fi with surreal elements. It's always nice to watch or read something that defies my expectations.

Maurice Vaughan

Well, you did call yourself an old timer, John Richard Sullivan. Haha I'd like to write a Tales from the Crypt type anthology script.

John Richard Sullivan

Horror anthologies are a rarity these days but they’re a lot of fun. Shudder recently brought back Tales from the Crypt so there’s an audience out there for it.

John Richard Sullivan Hi John, I’m glad you are pressing on with your creativity. Giallo Horror Films! I see you like life on the edge. What are your favourite films of the genre? (One, I must admit, I’d never heard of before. Thank you for the educational value of your post!!)

Jim Fidler

Hi John, good to meet you and connect! I'm a music composer from St. John's, Newfoundland, Canada.

Mark Deuce

Great to meet you John Richard Sullivan and the Bram Stoker film sounds amazing!!

John Richard Sullivan

Thanks for your feedback, Geoff! Giallo to me is definitely a vibe. I like the crazy ones like All the Colors of the Dark and the Red Queen Kills Seven Times. Subject matter-wise, some of them are what we would call today “problematic”, but they’re very unique, eccentric and stylish. Mine is adapted from The Judge’s House by Bram Stoker, and it subverts some of the subgenre’s tropes. It’s also written so that folks like yourself who have no prior knowledge of giallo can still enjoy it.

John Richard Sullivan

Thank you for the kind comment, Mark Deuce! Yes, definitely check out the Bram Stoker story and then check out my script on my logline page. My version changes the setting from 1890s England to early 1970s Italy. I also changed the lead character from a male math student in the original to a female art student (gialli often centered around female characters). I certainly hope my version is “amazing”. :-D. It might stand a better chance of being optioned by a producer.

John Richard Sullivan

Great to meet you too, Jim! :-) I’m also an aspiring film composer myself. I’m hoping if one of my scripts get optioned I can do the music as well.

John Richard Sullivan

Marc Deuce, 413 longlines?? You are one prolific dude. I guess I gotta get on the stick here if I hope to catch up to you. :-D
