Introduce Yourself : Hello, Everyone! by Keely Kemp

Keely Kemp

Hello, Everyone!

Hello! My name is Keely Kemp, I am a film finance manager. Basically, like a LP, accountant and producer all in one. I assist productions lay the financial groundwork needed to be in compliance with financiers and state film commissions. Every film should have a solid financial foundation before the first dollar is spent. I'm happy to provide free consultations! Great to meet all of you and feel free to find me on LinkedIn as well! Keely Yulla Kemp. Cheers!

Keely Kemp Welcome to our wonderful world of misfits :)

Mike Childress

Hi Keely. Welcome. Just a basic question for you (should you not be sworn to secrecy): Do most productions tend to go over budget, regardless of the size and scale of them?

Tim Bragg

Kelly I agree, every film should have a solid financial foundation. This is why I am getting all the money needed from you personally for my projects, hehe. Welcome.

Tim Bragg

Not true Shaun, my therapist says I am making huge improvements and moving away from being a misfit.

Shaun Kolich

Tim Bragg Well congratulations. Maybe I am the only misfit. I just feel better assuming everyone is just as misfit as I am lol... As there is a certain level of madness needed too be good story tellers.

Keely Kemp

Mike Childress In my own personal experiences, I have seen one film go over budget, and one film say they had X amount for a budget, but it was untrue causing chaos once in production. Though, I have heard of MANY instances. Both of my experiences were a result of poor planning and poor team communication. You can make a movie on almost any budget with strategic planning. The film that I witnessed go over budget was miscommunication between director, cinematographer, and the producer. It's easy to do when anyone can call the rental house and add a "few" more items to the invoice. When the vision doesn't meet the budget and expectations differ, chaos can ensue. Having purchase order plans, line producer approvals in place, and even letting the departments KNOW the budget can alleviate these common issues. Sometimes it's an accounting issue too. Like I mentioned in my post in Producing, there tends to be glitches in the timely communication between accounting and production, so the cost reports show you're spending less than you think you are (for example missing receipts from wardrobe/art, etc) so they think they have more to spend than they actually do.

Tim Bragg

I can't wait to see how they are going to recover the budget for Mission Impossible 8. From what I have read it's a mess.

Shaun Kolich

Tim Bragg In all fairness the law of diminishing returns isn't something a scientist made up. It applies to everything :)

Mike Childress

Keely Kemp Nice one, thanks!

Tim Bragg

There close to $400 million and they are still filming. Add marketing and distribution and they could be at $600 million before it is even released.

Thomas McShane

Keely Kemp I will add you via LinkenIn i would love to next work.

Daniel Silvas

Ramathan I would start with posting you r log lines and synopsis here. Not to discourage you but if your scripts are written the way you speak, they are going to have to be rewritten with proper grammar.

I would start with introducing yourself first, it is in the lounge. Let others know what you want, Stage 32 has great resources. Building a network will get your name out there. Show your work so we can see what you have so others can provide you with tips. Selling anything is hard. Big Break is a writing competition and they had 10,000 scripts submitted.
