Drawing & Animation Tablet Preferences

Hey, Animators!

I'm curious, what is your go-to tablet for drawing, animating, or 3D design? Do you prefer an iPad, Microsoft Surface, Wacom, XP Pen, Huion, Galaxy Tablet, etc.? Drop your preferences and why in the comments below!

Kuzillion recently made this great YouTube video comparing the new Huion Kamvas 13 Display Drawing Tablet to the Microsoft Surface Pro 7 that she's been using for years and it was interesting to get her insights on the differences and similarities!

I will live and die by my Wacom Cintiq!

May I ask why you prefer it, Bob Harper?

Bob Harper

Ashley Renee Smith I find them to be more durable in construction and the pen flow is second to none in my opinion. I have had very little to no issues with it.

I’ve heard Huion is all right. I wish the video had more to say about the Surface Pro. I’m in the market for a new laptop and I’ve got consumer paralysis.

I’ve used Wacom Intuos for years, which are tablet only, not monitors. But I draw best on paper.

I have a small Cintiq (too small) and I’ve used large ones at school when I teach. Haven't been able to get used to them. getting the right position and height for my posture and eyesight is an issue. Then finding the right placement for my keyboard— I have so many shortcuts that come naturally to my left hand. When I don’t have that keyboard handy it slows me down.

Great to know, Bob Harper! Thank you for sharing your thoughts!

Do you think you'd ultimately prefer an all-in-one device with a monitor, Mike Boas? Such as an iPad or Surface? it sounds like the others that you've tried have been more cumbersome.

Well if I used an Ipad, I wouldn't have a keyboard at all! I've tried out Procreate Dreams on my wife's iPad, but haven't given it enough use to know how I like it. I need to do a project on it, but at a time when I don't have deadlines. Usually for jobs I need to get done, I go to the standby workflows I've done in the past.

I highly suggest the magic keyboard for an iPad. My laptop died on me last year and I replaced it with the new iPad Pro and magic keyboard in May. I've only had it for a few months, but I LOVE it. The adaptability and convenience of it being a tablet or a laptop when I need is awesome.

Cintiq is definitely the go to -- although a lot of competitors ship off samples to animators to test (and keep and promote). Most everyone I know uses both Cintiq and iPad, iPad is terrific for quick sketches and Procreate which is the app Photoshop wishes it could be.

I cheaped out and only got myself a Cintiq 16. If I had the option for a do-over I would have saved more and got a better model.

I had a Surface Pro for years in the past and absolutely hated it. Everything else evolved so much faster in technology, and I always felt awkward drawing on it. Like the ergonomics were just off no matter what I tweaked.

Mine have only ever used for drawing though. I still do 3D animation on my desktop. (But my desktop is constantly being updated since I have video and sound editing inputs depending on what I'm working on at the moment.)
