This is an amazing phenomenon. The legacy of ‘Coraline’ just seems to keep growing.
“Coraline debuted in 2009 with an opening weekend gross of $16.8 million heading to $75.3 million domestically and $127 million globally.”
And the re-releases show no sign of box-office fatigue.
Why do you think this film resonates with audiences so much?

I remember my first time experiencing Caroline as a child. It was prior to the movie release (the book). Honestly, it's not your typical children movie. I would equate it to the tv show Courage the Cowardly Dog, as a child the show was terrifying but we kept watching. I think it's the unique storyline, character design and the little ounce of horror dripped into the mix. It was truly something I hadn't experienced before (not that I had many experiences at 7 years old). Even as an adult, I found myself watching the movie again. Now I think it's more so the nostalgic feeling. I think for a lot of people, this was their first light hearted introduction into horror. Now it's a core childhood memory, something we can now share with our kids.

Cyrus Sales thanks for sharing that with us, Cyrus. It does grab your attention when it’s on screen. I’m sure mesmerism is involved! ;-)

I am hosting a Stage 32 panel at Focus London on Dec. 10 (free to attend if you're in London) about telling authentic stories with universal themes. Coraline resonates because we can all understand on a deep level the emotional storytelling. It's a modern day, animated version of IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE. And that makes it always wonderful IMHO.

Carolina reminds we all have had times we had to start somewhere new. It can be hard adjusting to new beginnings like she did. But we learn to go on and make new friends.
