Quite often when I watch the opening credits of a movie, I'll notice the Listing 'STORY BY' before the Listing 'WRITTEN BY'. As most of you know I have a lot of concepts out there. I'd really like them to someday be picked up if possible. I'm wondering how can I transition them from their current status to the 'STORY BY' category. How does this work? Who do I need to contact in order to make this happen? Any suggestions will be most welcomed. Thanks very much. William Gunn wgunn1953@outlook.com

Hi William. Not quite sure what you are asking. A Story By credit is essentially a credit for the entity who likely developed the characters and plot that a particular film is based on, but did not actually write the screenplay for it or they developed the story before they wrote the screenplay. The big challenge in this industry is actually getting paid for an existing script or getting paid to write a screenplay (though any consistent effort in getting source material sold is a significant accomplishment). To make what you're referring to as a "transition" requires the same things every screenwriter is after...credible representation by an agent and/or manager and a damn good completed screenplay, so whoever may be interested in making that movie believes you are actually capable of writing a professional. compelling and entertaining full length feature.

If you write an original script, you've created it (story) and have written it. A producer or the like (studio, production company), likes the story, but doesn't like what you've written. So they bring in a new writer, and his instructions are "keep the story, but re-write it like this..." If the rewrite is significantly different from your script you will not receive any writing credit. You would receive a "Story by" credit. To answer the next part of your question, no one buys "story ideas" anymore. Stories are 10x more valuable when it's a great executed script!

Dan...my partners and I find ourselves in a similar fortunate position now as a TV pilot/series based on characters we created in a. previous screenplay moves forward,
