Somewhere circulating in a photographer's gallery there's a snapshot of me—caught mid-cry, with a face that probably shouldn't be seen in public. But that moment, sitting in the audience of a county play to honor civil rights leaders that were IN THE AUDIENCE, was one of the most unforgettable moments. I was watching a short play I’d written just a week before. I never expected tears, but there was something deeply moving about hearing my words spoken by actors. The thoughts and feelings from my mind had been given life on stage.
That experience bit me, and the feeling has never let me go. It’s the spark of courage I feel every time I face a blank page—an intimidating, empty thing. But now I know that if I stick with it, I will eventually see something I’ve created, and perhaps hear it aloud as well.
Do you remember the first time you heard your words spoken out loud?

It's an incredible feeling, AZ Yeamen! I remember the first time I heard my words spoken out loud. It was a short film called THE RIDDLER. I met the producer/director on Myspace.

The first time for me was on stage as an undergrad at the University of Iowa. It was a short comic piece and I was thrilled hearing the audiences response. Enjoy it when it happens.
