I directed and produced a suspense short and a horror short.
Furthermore I produced a documentary (which premiered in cinema last week in The Netherlands).
I was thinking about a strange thing concerning fiction movies. Do you recognize this? That you enjoy watching movies you wouldn't want to make yourself?
I love watching action movies, but I wouldn't want to make them myself.
On the other hand, I like making character-driven suspense movies, which I don't always enjoy watching.
That might sound strange... But I think it's the truth for myself....

Congratulations on directing and producing the shorts, Frank Van Der Meijden! Congratulations on your documentary premiering in cinema last week! I enjoy watching movies I wouldn’t usually write.

That’s such a fascinating and honest reflection, Frank Van Der Meijden, and I think more filmmakers relate to this than they realize. There’s something about the craft of making a film that taps into a completely different part of us than just being a fan or viewer.
Loving action films as a viewer could be about escapism, pacing, or the thrill of spectacle, whereas creating something character-driven gives you a deeper sense of control and connection to the story. It’s not strange at all, it’s a reminder that our creative instincts aren’t always a mirror of our viewing preferences. They’re more like an extension of what we need to express.
