It's the other way around in my opinion. Even with million dollar franchises like Marvel or DC, they all come from the some nerdy kid reading comic books. It may not seem that way, but that's where it all comes from.
Thanks Vlad, but it's time to move past the simplicity of the Screenwriting Career. Akin to Ying and Yang, both sides fuel each other and I'll be sharing my findings from the past four decades.
Miquiel Banks Admittedly, it probably is a simplistic perspective, but I think it stands. I feel the data aspect of it all is ultimately contrived. Other than for tax purposes, I don't think you can quantify inspiration that much --- maybe a trend or whatever. Great topic. Thanks for posting.
Miquiel Banks All businesses run on data. Whether the managers/owners know and interpret the data is another issue entirely. Cinema is first a business. The product it produces is art as entertainment. Use the data to guide decisions or fly by the seat of your pants.
Miquiel Banks I think Data and Inspiration are two different things, and maybe the real tension is Data vs. Innovation. I work in Business Intelligence and Data Analysis, and from that lens, Data is everything. So framing it as “Data vs. Inspiration” feels like saying “everything vs. a spark,” when in reality, everything can be a spark.
Maybe it’s really Data vs. relying only on (Raw) imagination. Because when you isolate imagination from insight, you risk missing patterns that could elevate the work.

Fuck data. People are using it the way drunks use a light pole; for support and not for illumination.
