Introduce Yourself : New-ish by Jim Cushinery

Jim Cushinery

New-ish

Former major label recording artist-turned director/writer. I’ve finished several music videos, a half-hour pilot, and two shorts, both with decent festival runs, the second, a horror comedy, premiered at Scream Fest at the Chinese Theater in Hollywood (that was a f-ing thrill). At present, I am ecstatic to say I am directing my first feature, “Grandma Did,” a dramedy about a group of former ‘70s swingers who, now in their 70s, reunite at one of their friends’ funerals and throw one last orgy in his honor. I’m obsessed with aging.

Jim Cushinery Hey Jim! Welcome : ) Nice to meet you! Cool, a former label recording artist, that's a first for me. And congrats on your shorts, and directing your fist feature film! That story sounds like a wild, fun ride.

Maurice Vaughan

Congratulations on directing your first feature and all your success, Jim Cushinery! I'm looking forward to seeing Grandma Did! What's your Horror Comedy about?

James LO

next do a dramedy about a Bryan Johnson type mogul who stops aging at 50

James LO

I’ll co write that with you if you want, hahaha, we do one scene each

James LO

Jim Cushinery sorry to spam your comments thread but I’m on the (rock n) roll here!

the story follows our protagonist Jon Branson as he doesn’t age until 100, one decade per act, and the soundtrack’s songs stretch backwards over the past 50 years. for example:

in reverse order: act one covers the 2030s and the song could be Hard Times from the 2010s, then forward one decade in time and back one decade in song, act two is 2040s and the song could be All My Friends from the 00s…

  • 1970s:

"Old Man" by Neil Young (1972)
    – A driving folk-rock anthem comparing the lives of a young man and an old man, realizing they share the same fundamental needs.
  • 1980s: "Middle of the Road" by The Pretenders (1983) – A high-energy rock track about the pressures of hitting mid-life and "standing in the middle of life with my pants around my ankles."
  • 1990s: "The Kids Aren't Alright" by The Offspring (1998) – A fast-paced punk anthem reflecting on how childhood friends grew up to face shattered dreams and the harsh reality of adulthood.
  • 2000s: "All My Friends" by LCD Soundsystem (2007) – A relentless dance-punk anthem about the exhaustion of aging out of the party scene and the bittersweet passage of time.
  • 2010s: "Hard Times" by Paramore (2017) – An upbeat, synth-pop anthem that uses a danceable rhythm to mask the anxiety of hitting "rock bottom" and struggling with the weight of maturity.

Maurice Vaughan It’s called “The Quota” about two middle-aged women who are not meeting their jobs’ expectations for picking up dead animals. Then they cross paths with a psycho killer.

Elle Bolan

Congratulations on directing your film!

GRANDMA DID sounds hilarious and a bit gross (though I probably won't think so when I'm 70 myself) so I'm going to need to know when that releases. I gotta watch it.

Maurice Vaughan

The Quota sounds interesting, Jim Cushinery! I picture it being kinda like Tucker & Dale vs. Evil with two women.

Richard "RB" Botto

Congratulations on taking the reins and directing, Jim Cushinery!

Jim Cushinery That Screamfest premiere at the Chinese Theater must’ve been unreal—congrats on that. And “Grandma Did” sounds wild in the best way, bold and heartfelt with a killer hook. I come from the music side myself, so I always appreciate seeing artists move between music and film so seamlessly. An obsession with aging feels like a rich lane to explore. Looking forward to seeing where this feature goes and connecting more.

Cyrus Sales yes, the Chinese show was indescribably delicious.Full theater of film makers and avid fans. Did a Q&A with all the other directors and everyone was super positive and supportive of each other.
