Film Festival in the Capital District NY

Capital District Film Fest Set For Inspiration Week on August 18th in Albany This year’s Capital District Film Fest will take place in Albany at the Palace Theater on August 18th and run all day culminating with awards given for the best locally produced productions. Along with locally made films, a special showing of the 1988 SCIFI Classic PULSE written and directed by Paul Golding will be shown. Golding attended film school with George Lucas and made their first student films together. A showing of their selected films will also take place at the film fest. Paul Golding will discuss his early film making days at the event. Additionally, actor Tim Colceri will talk about his acting career. He is an American actor and comedian. He is most known for his role in the 1987 Stanley Kubrick classic Full Metal Jacket, where he played the door gunner who uttered the much-quoted lines "Get some!" and "Ain't war hell?" Colceri will be teaching a three day acting workshop earlier in the week. Chris Hunter will show a special demonstration of the Palaphotophone from the Museum of Science and Innovation in Schenectady. The Palaphotophone was the an invention at GE in 1920 that allowed sound to be put on film leading the way to the development of motion pictures. They were able to replay the voice of Thomas Edison celebrating the 50th anniversary of the invention of the light bulb. Henry Ford, inventor of the famous Model T automobile, and President Herbert Hoover also speak on that recording. Edison’s brief speech praises those who used his inventions as a springboard and lightheartedly says that the 50th anniversary celebration proves that Americans can be sentimental. In addition to the Palaphotophone, the 1878 Edison Tin Foil will be demonstrated and discussed by Gwen Spicer who was able to prepare the foil so scientists could lift the voice and music from it. It is the first recorded sound of voice, music, and even the first “blooper” as the voice flubs the reciting of a poem. Entry fees are $25 per film or $10 if student. Send submissions to Don Rittner, POB Box 1710, Schenectady, NY 12309. Include five copies of the submission. Filmmakers who have produced works from May 2012 to May 2013 are eligible to submit for consideration.
