Introduce Yourself : Script reader by Chaitanya Kulkarni

Chaitanya Kulkarni

Script reader

Hi everyone, I just happened to complete my internship as a script-reader at Eclectic Pictures (the producers of Playing for the keeps, Solitary man and upcoming Lovelace). It was a great experience and here is assessment of my work. I am posting the mail I received as it is! Chaitanya, First, thank you for your interest in Eclectic Pictures and your completion of our on-line reading internship. Good scripts are the bedrock of any successful film company and we - like all production houses - have a neverending pile of projects to vet. We depend on smart, reliable readers like you to help focus our attention on truly worthy scripts. This means that sometimes you get stuck reading some real dogs, an unavoidable fact of the business that I nonetheless apologize for. We know what it's like and we all deeply appreciate you taking those bullets for us. We also appreciate that you gave every script - even the poor ones, the ones that arguably had no business being submitted in a professional arena - an honest accounting. Your coverage never took on an air of dismissiveness or superiority. You made it about the script - good, bad, average - and not about how smart or funny you could be. That shows a seriousness and respect on your part that we prize greatly in our readers, and which will serve you well in this business. You were always substantive in your analyses and offered constructive criticisms. You proved able to break a story down into its separate elements without ever losing the forest for the trees. You always had an eye on how those elements built (or failed to build) to a cohesive whole. You were as concerned with the larger and deeper issues like theme and a character's emotional journey as you were with plot points, a script's internal logic, and formatting. You exhibited an understanding of how structure and formatting could often help, but sometimes hinder a story and you never let "the rules" take precedence over "good writing," the latter being immeasurably more important yet somehow more difficult to define. You were as good when you were offering praise as you were when you were panning a script, which is a surprisingly rare ability. To some degree I suppose that's because we inevitably get more practice panning scripts than praising them. But it also has to do with really understanding what makes a well-told story. I also want to take a moment to laud your consistancy. You turned in coverages at regular intervals as requested and promised. "Turned in work on time" may be less "sexy" praise than some other you received but it's important and we noticed it. We appreciated knowing you would complete your coverages without needing to be prodded at all. It meant we could go to you when we needed a specific coverage turned quickly, which we did and you always came through for us. That desire and sense of responsibility will serve you well. So, again, I thank you for your time and effort. I hope you found the internship enjoyable and enlightening. If you ever need anything and we can help, please don't hesitate for a moment to ask. If you need me to do anything so you can get school credit or whatnot just let me know. I'll get you that letter of recommendation at my earliest convenience. If there's anything here you'd like further explanation of or if there's anything specific you'd like to ask about that I didn't address, just let me know. Thank you, Best, John
