Acting : Actors who fasify their qualifications............ by Johanna Marshall

Actors who fasify their qualifications............

My vent if you allow me guys........More & more I am seeing communication from casting directors on their breakdowns that basically are warning that certain people will be banned if the job calls for a specific talent or "accessory" whether it be a car, pet, etc. People are submitting and asking their agents to submit them when they don't have the qualifications. The casting director puts a permanent ban on the person, the agency follows suit and a lot of wasted time and energy is exerted for these individuals that don't care. I realize it's tough out there, but if you don't have the decency to be honest with yourself as far as what you can do and what you can't, why should a casting director. agent director, you name it believe in you period???????????? The rest of us would like to have that opportunity!!!! I thank you!!!.

Well if they are getting banned it would help you in the long run because you actually have the qualifications they're looking for. So in the long run it probably doesn't hurt you because you're being honest. The only person that is getting hurt in the long run are the actors that lie in the first place. Just make sure your agent isn't doing that to you. I know in regards to casting I only ban actors who have shown me that they don't take the craft serious i.e. bad communicators, late to set etc.

I understand & agree with you Tiffy......I mainly was speaking as to how these people create an "atmosphere" or creative ambiance if you will towards the whole casting process.......Like putting a thorn in with a vase full of roses.........................

I see that happen often in TV. CD's warned me often of actors they have dropped do to something as small and seemingly insignificant as accents they have not perfected and skills they have not perfected. You are right, Johanna, it is a waste of my time to read an actor who says they can do a Russian or Cockney accent or can ride a horse and then find out that they are not completely skilled but "learning".

Amen!

NO SENSE IN THAT, JUST BE TRUTHFUL AND ADVANCE YOUR KNOWLEDGE WITH EDUCATION AND ON THE JOB EXP, THEN YOU CAN SAY YOU HAVE DONE SO.

Last year I put up an open call for both technical and acting talent. The piece was a small project being developed for a federal agency dealing with homeland security. After wading through 150 contact letters and bios I came across one wherein the person touted their vast professional background and their ability to "hit the ground running". Upon further investigation, their closest experience in that regard was working for a health club as a personal trainer. Needless to say, I don't bother with non-represented, open casting anymore.

Johanna Marshall

Ah yes....and the page turns............BTW: I like the simplicity of your words in your profile.............Appreciate our connection JR.........

Definitely annoying. However, embellishing experience and falsifying qualifications isn't exclusive to our world -- it happens in every profession. Having been on both sides of the aisle I understand the frustration. It is a real time waster, but that’s part of the hiring game. I hope folks don’t restrict their search for talent to just represented actors – it will make it harder for those qualified performers without an agent to be considered.
