Adaptation Advice

I'm planning on writing an adaptation of a book I loved as a kid, but I don't have the rights (clearly, or I wouldn't be writing this message.) Does anybody have any ideas or advice on how to secure the rights and/or the financial backing to pay for the rights? Any help would be greatly appreciated. -Ryan

To contact the author, you usually can get information from the book's publisher.

Justin Sloan

Yeah, or just go to their site and send an email - they will probably direct you to their agent.

I've heard horror stories and would advise against adaptations, period! You don't want to work on a script for 6 months to have it blocked due to the rights issue. You can't pitch these scripts without proof you have the rights. If the author agrees at first get paperwork in place -- they may not like what you do with the script in order to adapt it and change their minds.

Thanks for the advice, everyone- I'm tabling the script for now and working on a different project until I can figure out a way to secure the rights.
