Is anyone as tired of "remakes" as I am. Where is originality anymore?

Please tell me how many times that they are going to remake "Carrie" and "Fright Night"? I cannot stand the fear and cowardice that I see oozing out of Hollywood these days. The movies are literally trash......well, some of them have a little merit like the true horror story "The Conjuring". Where are all of the great directors and producers like James Cameron, Dino DeLaurentis, Martin Scorcese, etc. These guys know how to make a movie and good ones that have some length and great sound quality. It seems like "cheap and short" is the way to go for some of these Directors. I like Peter Jackson as well. When are they going to stop being chicken hawks and take a chance on a good movie?

I certainly am. it is more about the money now and not the art of creativity anymore. remaking movies that made a lot of money in box offices. It is sad.

I totally hear you :)

Yeah!.. The next Spiderman (constant)remake will be along shortly.. "Hurray for Hollywood!".. Where drivel is driven like a bus!.. Just makes writing a pleasure..

There is very little stomach for risk. The monolithic blockbusters of this age stride like giant monsters across the cinescape, battling like Godzilla; the winner roars in triumph, the loser falls, crushing the city, never to rise again. The cost of those failed flops is immense, often hundreds of millions of dollars. Almost everything needs to be a proven commodity first, sequels and adaptations of books, comics, old television, etc. This often includes the directors, actors, and writers as well. The sad thing is, the movie going public is certainly part of the problem: everyone turns up for Iron Man 3, Pacific Rim nearly fails. While advertising is a part of that, people flock to the familiar rather than risk it on the new, and we all pay the price. Ah well, rant over.

Hollywood likes money. If a movie makes good money they say: "Give me the same but different." I too prefer original stuff. But then again, some people say there's nothing original out there... I beg to differ.

What I learned 25+ years ago in my college class "Music as a business" The cost to re do or do a cover is much cheaper to do, with a proven track record. I think that is why you see Star Trek 52 coming to a theater near you....

Welome to the entertainment BUSINESS.

@Miss Cheyenne Clap, clap, clap! I had to give you a round of applause because I couldn't agree with you more. I had planned on conducting research to find out how many of these remakes are a commercial success, well received by the audience viewers, and critically acclaimed? I have a hunch that they will not fit into any of the categories. I cannot think of one remake which I have preferred over the original. When I think of all the hard work that goes into creating a great screenplay, and believe me it is so hard, just to find out that there is going to be yet another remake it annoys me to the core. You have inspired me to start the research now, right here on S32. Watch this space!

When they stop making bushels of money, people will stop making them.

Remakes, comic book and novel franchises provide built in audiences and are soft risk investments. Since the financial meltdown of 08 the film industry lost some 20 odd banks for financing and hundreds of hedge funds. What they generate now is proof of just how hard it is to get financing for original productions. It is also proof of the studios posture on risk taking right now.

"Cheap and Short" is their way to protect themselves from the dwindling attention spans of Americans who need to check their phones every 10 minutes, and the cheap part is just typical of Hollywood. It makes me weep, especially when I see the trailers for the RoboCop remake. Talk about a crime against film!
