I think that like Blu-ray its an attempt to keep consumers buying a physical format of films but that it is only going to have a short life span. due mainly to the ease of digital distribution of media both legally and illegally.
I personally like 3D, and hope to be able to work on a 3D project someday, but I agree that often times it's used simply as a gimmick to increase sales.
I am for 3D, but to use as a color in a painters palette board. I feel 3D can add another layer to a movie where we can use science and art to help tell the story. I feel 3D is like when back in the day sound was added to moving pictures. A whole new realm to explore and manipulate.
I find many 3D films are made for 3D sakes. Having says that, come up with an inventive idea and 3D may well add that extra spark
I agree with the 3D for 3D sake remark. Its just another way to make a profit. However, I suppose in a way it helps prevent piracy.
