Hi, I'm an author, screenwriter and documentary film maker. I am thinking self-publish of fiction novel and would appreciate words of wisdom in this regard.
Publish on amazon.com's Create Space. Quite easy to do and the only money out of pocket is your copyright fee and a book cover fee. Fiverr.com is a great inexpensive (about $35) place to have a book cover made.
Hi, What a coincidence, I just self published a book ("On The Horizon" by Evelyn Stallard, I compiled and edited it) through Createspace and it is available now on Amazon in paperback and Kindle. I have to say it has been a great experience so far. I did not have to pay for a cover as they have a feature in Createspace where you can design your own unless you have a specific design in mind. Let me know how it works out for you.
You should probably look into doing it first as an ebook, doesn't cost anything except your time and you could even feature it on Amazon.com, maybe Ebay as well. But, an editor and cover artist is always a good first thing to do.
that is exactly what I am thinking. Have you visited Fiverr? I found a fantastic artist on this site who is illustrated a children's book for me. She is based in Florence and I am knocked out by her illustrations.
Create a platform for yourself first. Who is your audience and build it up now. Before you write it answer: what is your book about? why do people need it? What have others done successfully and unsuccessfully? Who can help you get the world out about my book? Why because planning your launch is almost more important then writing the book. Then you write it. And a bonus note, Series books generate more income then a single book. Think of your brand in a bigger way. Best of luck!
Self publishing companies are dangerous, most of them are scam artists. I have come across far to many. You should talk to publishers who would be interested in publishing your work and helping you build your platform. Like Austin Macauley Publishing, Solstice Publishing, Pegasus Publishing UK. There is plently more, don't go down self publishing unless you can't find the right publisher for you
There's no such thing as a self publishing company. Let me explain. Either you are the publisher, taking on all costs and registering the ISBN (in which case you hire a printer), or you buy a package of some sort from a vanity press.
Self publishing properly, even an ebook, does cost. Cover design, story and copy editing, and formatting, at the very least. (Sure, you can just throw your work into the world, just be ready for it to collect dust.)

Thanks Marilyn for this advice. Can you recommend anyone particular on Fiverr.com who designs covers for both print and E-book?

Hire a real editor and cover designer.

So I am becoming aware. The Marketing of the book seems as important as the publishing
