Hey Stage 32 Cinematographers, I need to find decent tools for shooting, in the New York City area. I'm without a shadow of a doubt broke, so I'm hoping there's a place that can donate or rent for very cheap. Thanks a lot to those who respond, any information WILL BE cherished.
I don't know of any rental house that can afford to donate equipment to all the broke filmmakers out there. My suggestion is to find people with equipment willing to donate their time rather than a rental house willing to give away their service.
Many of the bigger houses will often donate equipment to legitimate student projects. Panavision, for example, and Arri CSC has often given me great deals-- once we got about 1/2 a mill of kit from them for a grand a weekend, which was insanely cheap. But as mentioned, this is very rare and also would require you to carry production insurance-- which you should be carrying anyway, but I digress. Best bet is to try to find a young DoP who has invested in some kit and pay them a honorarium to come out. Don't ask people to work for free. It's not only illegal in most cases, it also makes folks a lot less likely to take you seriously, and that means the film generally suffers as well. Bottom line is, if you have no money, you're not yet ready to make your film. Save up, fund raise, and do it right.
Put an advert at NYC Tish, a lot of the film students there are rich and have a lot of their own gear.
also u can try new york new york film academy. I think there're still at union sq.
Thanks everybody!
