The VASE with the MANY COLOURED MARBLES

Press Release Author Jacob Singer tells the sweeping saga of a family fractured by apartheid against the beautiful and harsh backdrop that is South Africa Vancouver, BC, Canada (May 1, 2014) – “I have walked that long road to freedom. I have tried not to falter; I have made missteps along the way. But I have discovered the secret that after climbing a great hill, one only finds that there are many more hills to climb…” ― Nelson Mandela So says the most charismatic, indefatigable leader in South Africa who worked to rebuild the country's once segregated society with peaceful protest, determination and persistence. With echoes of this invincible man, author and native South African Jacob “Jack” Singer tells the inspiring story of a family fractured by apartheid in The Vase with the Many Coloured Marbles. The main characters, Emma and her daughter Marla, ultimately triumph over the brutal system by the use of subterfuge, peaceful protest and education. The Vase with the Many Coloured Marbles is a compelling, must-read novel based on a true story about people that Singer knew in his hometown of Potchefstroom, South Africa. Marla, Emma’s daughter, was a lovely, 13-year-old girl that Singer met at the municipal swimming pool one sweltering summer day and asked on a date. He was to know and admire both Marla and Emma throughout the rest of their lives. Singer knew many active players on both sides of the political fence during this turbulent time period. When he and his family were threatened by security police, they immigrated to Vancouver in 1992 just before Mandela was elected the country’s first black President in 1994. The Vase received four-star ratings on Amazon and Goodreads and is gaining acclaim as an important story for our time that mirrors America’s racial struggle and parallels current books by American authors such as Wash by Margaret Wrinkle and The House Girl by Tara Conklin. “The only difference between slavery in America and the apartheid system in South Africa is that Blacks could not be sold as property in South Africa,” Singer said. The story is universal – the battle against violence, cruelty and human degradation found in countries throughout the world at different times. South Africa’s apartheid system eerily mirrors the rise of Nazism in Germany and many Jewish families immigrated to South Africa before World War II only to find a similar system of racial discrimination against the Blacks. The Vase is available through Singer’s website, www.jacobashersinger.com, Amazon and at selected bookstores in Vancouver and throughout the world.
