David Garner. Montgomery, AL. I wrote my first full length screenplay last year without ever having read a single screenplay. I sent it to a successful Hollywood writer, producer, actor (and first cousin) and asked for his unbiased opinion. He loved my creativity, imagination and style, but said my understanding of format and following basic rules sucked. Ha, just what I needed to boost my confidence and dive in even deeper. I've since read several quality screenplays, a book, Save The Cat, has been a huge help and i'm currently writing my second full length screenplay. I recently took a break and entered a cool screenplay writing contest (NYC Midnight Screenplay Contest) because it starts with a 12 page screenplay based on an assigned genre, subject and character with one week to complete. Deadlines are a must for me. I finished and submitted and can't wait to receive feedback and compare it to others.
Good luck with it, David. Struggling with formatting is a much better position to be in than struggling with creativity and voice.
