Hola!!! I'm a screenwriter in New York City with ten features in my portfolio as well as seven shorts... and a book I published with my brother. My ninth feature script I've been thinking of directing myself, but I've been warned that jumping into a feature as your first project might be a bit nuts, so I have this other short that I'd like to do, The Origami Gate. It's kind of hard to explain without giving it away, but its genesis came after watching my grandma's decline from dementia, wondering what (if anything) was going on that she couldn't express. So I wrote this story from behind those silent eyes (maybe that should be the title), about a couple who relives their youth and their life together. Even though communication to the outside world has ceased, their connection to each other remains. So I guess this is my call to arms for anyone else itching to DO, and not just dream.
I hope it works out. My mother had Parkinson's and Dementia. Her eyes spoke more than she could express verbally.
Welcome Jeffrey. That's a fascinating topic -- best of luck!
My eleventh short play, The 500 Goodbyes, describes my mother's last years, during which I could detect the wheels still turning beneath her senility, as she sorted and processed the important events of her life.
Thank you all for the kind words and well wishes. Alle, I'll direct my night or day, whichever. ;) I assume you meant ninth. My ninth feature that I wrote, not filmed. I have ten features written, not made.

Jeffrey and Jeff - Your vivid descriptions of your mothers' declining conditions have reminded me of my own mother's apparent decision to retreat into her memories, until one day in the hospital, following surgery, she voluntarily poked her head through her mental haze to let me know she was still there. Thanks.

Thanks for adding that, Bill. I think this memory processing is the highest priority for most as they approach the Never Seen Door. I'm grateful that my mother was able to communicate well enough to give me a peek at what was going on behind the scenes. The gears were still turning.
And this is why I want to finally make this film, why I write anything that I do, why I feel any form of art is particularly worthwhile... when it can connect to others and link them together in shared experience. I never write for the mass market. It's always personal in some regard, understanding that some won't get it, but knowing that others absolutely will.

Just follow your passion project and see it through. Even try crowdfunding and spreading the word of your project. I am sure somewhere the Angel of Abundance will send that person to help fund.

Good luck Jeffrey! I know what it's like to have the passion to see one of your screenplays brought to life through actors. Good luck, wish I could help!
