Getting strong performances

An actor's goal I assume, is produce the most authentic and real performances she or he can of their character. My question goes out to actors: From your point of view, what is the best thing the director can do to help make that happen? What is it the worst thing they can do? It's a pretty general question, so the answers might be quite subjective.

Jason, thanks. This is exactly what I wanted to hear. I always strive to bring out the best in everyone on set, and cultivate an atmosphere of collaboration that inspires creativity. No doubt communication is vital, as is creating a comfortable environment for actors esp in a medium that is so contrived in its execution and bogged down with logistical and time constraints. Holy shit. How actors can do their job is amazing.

The acting you talk about having done at the last minute when an actor dropped out was in a student stage play wasn't it, Alle? How does this and having directed/produced a few shorts qualify you to give masterclasses?
