Thanks, Kerry. You're right that keeping the reader/viewer off balance for a bit could be a good thing. I think the important factor there is not doing that too long as well as not using the cliche gimmick, as you pointed out. I appreciate all the advice from everybody so far!

Many times, that's the idea, to fool the viewer into thinking it's real, and then you wake up. That's how real dreams work more often than not. It depends on what you, the writer, are trying to do. Yes, montages and dream sequences are used a lot, but that doesn't mean you can't. It just means you should have a very good reason, and you should do it exceptionally well. And yes, put a big bang in the first ten pages. You need something to hook your reader in and put them on the edge of their seat, so to speak. Grab their attention and don't let go.
