It depends on specific context and a whole lot of factors—which we have none here for a productive discussion. ;) Sushanth, is there a specific type of film or an example to share to give some context? Are you talking about experimental film? Non-linear? Both can fall under three act... And of course many three act films can be theorized as to having more than three acts. The usual films that often come up as having "different" structures are Memento and Pulp Fiction. Both did well with critics and audiences. Anyway, I don't know if you wish to dive into film theory or not?—my guess is not. Rather you are asking if "different" can be "successful." And, sure, anything is possible. But again, it depends. ;)

In general a "blockbuster" is a movie with wide audience appeal. The term (as it relates to movies) also means a finished movie that makes a lot of money - so a "small" movie can become a blockbuster. Yes, it is okay to write a screenplay that might appeal to a wide audience.
