Jim Sugar: Filmmaker and photographer (still) in Mill Valley, California.

Jim Sugar has been a working photographer since three days after graduating with Honors from Wesleyan University in Middletown, Connecticut when National Geographic hired Jim as a summer intern. Since then, he illustrated 35 articles in National Geographic Magazine and 3 books for the National Geographic book division. His published articles include Ireland, Iceland, the travels of Captain Cook, Provence, American Wheatcutters, American truck drivers, an Ethiopian village, the US National Gallery of Art, and Christopher Columbus’ first village in the New World. His published book assignments include America’s Sunset Coast and US Railroads. Jim has also completed extensive military assignments for Popular Mechanics Magazine. His 9 cover stories include articles on US Special Forces including the Navy Seals, the Army Rangers and the Air Force Special Forces. He has also shot six cover stories for Boy's Life Magazine. His commercial clients include DuPont, AT&T, IBM, SAP, and VISA. For more than 25 years Jim has photographed the planes of Burt Rutan in Mojave, California. Both on land and in the air, Jim’s coverages include the Global Flyer Round-the-World aircraft and the SpaceShipOne rocket ship, which won the $10 million X-Prize. His photographic awards include the National Press Photographers Association Magazine Photographer of the Year and runner-up in the White House News Photographer Contest. He holds a Masters degree from the Annenberg School at the University of Pennsylvania and a second Masters degree from Wesleyan University. Since learning filmmaking three years ago, he has completed two films which have been screened in six film festivals. He is fluent in French, holds a Commercial pilot's license with instrument, multi-engine, and seaplane ratings, and scuba dives, when necessary, to make photos.
