Just wanted to introduce myself. I signed up here yesterday so I haven’t had a lot of time to delve deeply into what all the site has to offer. However, those I’ve met in the past year who’ve been doing this longer than myself told me I couldn’t go wrong becoming a regular. So, here I am.
I grew up in the video rental store generation and spent most of my summers devouring movies of every genre imaginable (it helped to have a mother who worked at a local chain and could rent non-new releases for free!). I was never a writer, more of a reader until the age of 26 when a therapist I was seeing mentioned writing might be a good idea. I accepted his challenge and starting writing really bad poetry for the next six years.
After a battle with addiction that lasted through those six years, I finally settled down, got clean and tried my hand at a novel. This went terribly, and was followed by a few more years of floundering and heavy drinking.
Then, two years ago, I started to look at what it takes to be a screenwriter and became intrigued. I read handfuls of scripts and thought it would fit my writing style perfectly. That Christmas, my girlfriend asked me what I wanted for a gift and I said, without hesitation, “Final Draft ‘10”, which I did receive.
Cut to a year later and I finally worked up the nerve to try my first script. It came out horrible. But I wrote another. And that wasn’t much better. And I wrote a third. And this one gained some traction.
Cut to today and I have finished my fifth feature length script and added two shorts (this count does not include those first two bad ones I mentioned). Ive written in the genre’s of horror, thriller, dark comedy and drama. I’ve fallen madly in love with screenwriting and can’t imagine doing anything else. And the heavy drinking slowed to a non-dangerous amount. And I’m going on my sixth year of being off drugs. So there’s that, too.
Anyway, that is my story and I hope to get to know more of you in the coming year.
Nice to meet you, Vincent. Thanks for reaching out
