Hey Jarrod, the 'Gunslingers Rule' is a pet project I was asked to shoot and co-direct with James Fields who went to Park City High with the subject, Mat Lints - an aspiring speed skater who, is independently training to get onto the US Skating team in hopes of making the 2014 Winter Olympic games. He is doing so without any sponsorship and comes from a relatively humble background. His father died in a car crash, his mother drives a school bus... Mat is now 38 years old. I took particular interest in his journey because of the adversity that he faces -- It's a long shot. In addition Mat has been plagued with a speech impediment which has basically driven him to be a loner most of his life. I found him to be an aspiration and an optimistic soul - and his story inspiring to say the least. The idea was to begin a promotional piece for him to draw attention to his plight, hopefully garnering the attention from potential sponsors. In addition, James and I thought, "why don't we follow him on his journey? Let's see if we can raise some $ to do so." James and I made a film with another Park City native, Enzo Mileti, about ten years ago called Pipe Dreams, which followed the journey of two Olympic athletes, also for Park City -- Ricky Bower an Joe Pack --climaxing at the 2002 SLC games - where Joe took Silver in men's aerials. Pipe Dreams became an official selection of Sundance for the 2003 festival and garnered some attention. But what I find more intriguing about Mat's story is simply that the odds are completely stacked against him ,yet he is determined to not let anything stand in his way. We filmed him for two days last year and came up with this teaser, in the hopes of getting some finical help for the film. Unfortunately, it never picked up steam. I haven't spoken to Mat lately, but something tells me he's still at it. I'd love to talk about the prospects of picking up where we left off if you think there may be something there.
