In November 2018, I returned to Los Angeles to re-engage my career in the film business as a writer, director and producer. I currently have 2 shorts and a feature in development and the first short will go into production in the second half of 2019.
In July of 1981, we had just moved to Newbury Park, CA. I was 13. I hadn’t met any friends yet, so I went to the movies a lot. It was about a 5 miles ride to the nearest theater. My mom didn’t drive so my bike was my freedom.
One day I went to the mall to see Superman II for probably the 4th time. The cost of a ticket was $2.00 for 12 and under and I was fudging my age to get in. When I went to buy the ticket the kid at the box office just looked at me and said, “$2.50. You’re 13. $2.50”. I only had $2.00 and he wouldn’t budge.
I decided to ride the extra mile to the Janss Mall and see another movie. The Janss theater was less expensive and I could get a ticket for $2.00. That’s how I saw Raiders of the Lost Ark. I was engaged, immersed and addicted from the first crack of the whip to the final push from the guy wheeling the Ark through the warehouse at the end.
On my ride home, I could think of nothing but the film I’d just seen and I already had plans to get my parents to take the whole family the following weekend. About a mile into my ride home, I got a flat tire. With my mother not driving and my father hours away from coming home, there was no choice but to push my bike home. A couple miles later and the extra time I had to think, I decided that what I wanted to do with my life was make movies. That was the day my love affair with motion pictures began.
After high school, I attended Columbia College, Hollywood back in the days when it was still in Hollywood. It’s in Tarzana now. It was a great experience and one that I cherish with fond memories.
After college I worked on a couple of features and a lot of commercials and music videos. I even got to do an industrial commercial for a phone company that starred E.T. However, there was a lot going on in my personal life and it made sense to step away from the business and return to it when it could have the attention my career deserves. That time is now.
I’m back in Los Angeles to collaborate with other talented artists and crafts people in order to build a career as a writer, director and producer.
