Gavin Newsome has signed new legislation in California protecting performers and their likenesses from being exploited by AI without compensation. This was a big sticking point during the SAG-AFTRA strike and having legislation backing it up can be helpful for performers. Things are evolving fast and protecting California's citizens who make a living with their talent is a potent step. What do you think of these new laws? https://deadline.com/2024/09/ai-bills-gavin-newsom-hollywood-performers-...

Sam Sokolow hi Sam, but does that mean if the Production company is say, in Georgia, that they can still be exploited by AI?

Geoff Hall - I haven't read the legislation in detail enough to know if/how the law protects across state lines. The Gov of Tennessee signed a similar law in March to protect country artists from AI usage so some things may be state by state. Given that all of the big studios, streamers and tech companies are based in, or started in, California I imagine there is some protection there if they are at fault. But, like any legislation, consulting an attorney is always a smart idea when things happen that you are involved in as an artist.

Sam Sokolow, It's exciting because it's setting a standard and more states are likely to pursue similar protections moving forward. Hopefully, it will spread and become more standard across the country.

This is a great thing Sam Sokolow and I think that other states will follow. I bet New York will probably be next as well as Georgia, and Illinois who are also big entertainment production hubs. I challenge artists in those states to start lobbying your legislatures.
