I've not been quiet or chill about how much I loved the first season of Arcane. The first time I watched it, I was blown away by the art, music, story, and most of all the characters. Over the last few years, it's become a comfort watch for me, something that I can easily put on and watch again and again. When the second season was released a few weeks back, I was excited and nervous to see how a continuation of the series would play out. I began to worry that I had built the world of the show up in my mind to such heights that a second season was doomed to struggle. But I was wrong. I was so. so. wrong.
Arcane is one of the best series of television- animation or live-action that I've ever watched. And I watch a LOT. A big reason for that is how the characters, specifically the female characters, are written and portrayed. This article below does a great job of contextualizing the why/how- https://www.cbr.com/arcane-female-representation-best-video-game-tv-adap...

Audiences do crave original, complex female characters, Ashley Renee Smith. I do, and I love writing scripts with original, complex female characters (leads and major characters). I'm starting Arcane tonight.

I watched the first episode last night, Ashley Renee Smith. That’s the way to start a series! I like the animation style! I’ve never seen a show with that style. I’ve only seen one episode, but the female characters (and male characters) are complex so far. The writers/crew did an incredible job getting me to care about the characters.

It only gets better, Maurice Vaughan! They approach each season as a 3-act structure, so the first 3 episodes are Act 1, episodes 4-6 are Act 2, and episodes 7-9 are Act 3. It's awesome to binge the show in 3 episode segments.
I didn't know that, Ashley Renee Smith. Thanks for letting me know. I plan on watching two episodes tonight.

Ashley Renee Smith I couldn’t agree more with your thoughts on Arcane! It’s truly a masterclass in storytelling, art, and, as you highlighted, creating original and complex female characters. As a creator of the digital animated series @allblackanime and the upcoming show Soturi, I’m inspired by what Arcane has achieved and strive to bring that same depth and nuance to the women in my stories.
In Soturi, I’ve focused on crafting dynamic female characters who are not only integral to the plot but who also reflect diverse experiences and complexities. Each has her own goals, strengths, and flaws, making them feel authentic and relatable. The series showcases powerful women, from warriors breaking societal molds to thinkers who challenge the system in quieter, equally impactful ways.
Thanks for sharing this post—it’s such a great reminder of the importance of representation done right. I’d love to connect more about animation and storytelling!

Ashley Renee Smith I have just begun to watch the second series and like you I love the artwork. It is so wonderfully drawn. I like all the characters, how they are developed, I don’t think there’s one who is a ‘filler’.
I think it’s a shame that there isn’t going to be a third series. I’m not sure why they are bringing it to a close, when it’s so popular, but hey, I obviously don’t have the mind of an exec on that one!

Geoff Hall, they’re continuing the show, just not the Vi and Jinx storyline. They feel that there are so many other stories to explore within the world that they want to shift the focus. I think they do a good job of setting up other storylines in season 2 that they can explore more, while bringing the Jinx and Vi storyline to a strong conclusion. My current theory is that Mel and her mother are setting up the next big arc, but that’s not confirmed yet that I’ve seen.
