Hope you're all doing excellently~ was wondering (and pardon me for not knowing the correct terminology), with the advent of digital animation, does anyone still do it the old-school way of using paper and whatnot?
I'm toying with the idea of making some truly homegrown animation using the materials at my disposal, and I know one method is flipbooks. The reason I want to do it the old way is to reduce eye strain (I'm behind a computer often enough as is lol), but also using actual art supplies is just fun. If you do it the old way, I'd love to also see some of your projects.

Hope you're doing excellently too, Banafsheh Esmailzadeh! I haven't drawn in a long time, but if I started again, I'd definitely draw on paper, like drawing concept art and storyboards for my scripts. There's nothing like drawing on paper.

Thank you, Maurice Vaughan, I am :D I agree, I love drawing on paper, and painting is fun, too (not to mention therapeutic experimenting with colours and application methods of said colours). I haven’t used a flip book in literal decades, but nonetheless I want to try animating at home no matter how rough it looks. I love the satisfaction of making something all by myself.

Banafsheh Esmailzadeh This is really dope that you're going old-school with it. I’ve actually thought about doing the same on the audio side — recording a full song on tape, fully analog. Everyone I know who grew up in that era swears they’d never go back because of how tedious the process is, but since I didn’t grow up with it, I’m curious to experience it for myself. I feel like going through that workflow would give me an even deeper appreciation for the craft.

Thank you Cyrus Sales, and that’s awesome, too! I grew up with cassette tapes but never actually recorded anything on one (and in all fairness this was back when I was really young and they were already being phased out in favour of CDs), so I’m definitely rooting for you to try that out. I never studied animation myself outside of that one afterschool class thing where we used flip books, but I know it’ll be labour-intensive and expensive to go through that many art supplies even for a short project but nonetheless it’ll be fun to try out :D

Banafsheh Esmailzadeh I grew up during the CD era although I did manage to collect some of my mom's cassette as it was being phased out. I'm not too sure when I'll be able to do it but it's on the list of things to do. Keep us updated on your journey as well.

Nice Cyrus Sales, I think we got rid of all of our cassettes and we don't even use CDs anymore in my house ^^; but definitely cheering you on, and I'll keep you updated, too~

2D animation has never gone away, and the true artists still use it. Aaron Blaise and Andreas Dejas are two of the best (living) 2D animators and both have shorts out now. Aaron's can be seen here: https://youtu.be/xOXolSQcEb4?si=_fwkeuh9PF7A0YxU
Andreas, is releasing Dec. 15th. Aaron also teaches 2D (and everything else) for dirt cheap on his website. creatureartteacher.com

Banafsheh Esmailzadeh - glad I jumped here and saw your post. I just recently found a young 2D artist/animator and he's currently working on a 30 sec teaser for my script Blue Surf based on my own hand drawn (with computer mouse) drawings. I may put it up here when he's done. Wishing you all the best moving forward, Banafsheh :)
