Animation : Osamu Tezuka by Banafsheh Esmailzadeh

Osamu Tezuka

One of my favourite creators is the Godfather of Manga himself, Osamu Tezuka. The man is responsible for anime being what it is, and he created a mindblowing amount of anime and manga across every genre, the most famous of course being Astro Boy (which I will watch one day lol).

What's your favourite Tezuka manga/anime? I have a special place in my heart for the 1969 anime for Dororo, whose opening is posted below.

I enjoyed the anime Metropolis, based on his comic (produced some years after his death).

Also, I use his two instructional books on animation all the time when teaching.

Metropolis is a great one! I should rewatch it soon, as well as check out his books. Right now I’m going through his manga that I was able to get my hands on, going to read his Buddha series soon.

Book 1 covers the basics of animation we see in other books, but with Japanese style characters. some nice bits on special effects animation too.

Book 2 is out of print and usually expensive when sold online. It has walk cycles for any animal you can think of! Very useful. Fortunately, it’s on Archive.org.

Hi, I strongly recommend Buddha. The style is unique, and the way it depicts his life is original and respectful, while directly engaging with contemporary issues.
