Cinematography : Vertical Cinema — gimmick or genuine opportunity? by Lindsay Thompson

Vertical Cinema — gimmick or genuine opportunity?

Just read an interesting blog about the rise of micro-dramas — short, vertical, serialized episodes (about 30–90 seconds) built for phone viewing. Think scripted storytelling meets the pacing of TikTok.

What caught my attention wasn’t the format… it was the ecosystem:

• Billions in global revenue already

• Fast turnaround productions (entire seasons in ~8–10 days)

• Real actors, writers, and crews getting paid

• Audiences actually following characters week to week

It feels less like “short-form content” and more like a new distribution model — one that lets filmmakers test story, pacing, and audience response immediately instead of waiting on festivals and gatekeepers.

I’m curious where people land on this.

Is vertical storytelling creatively limiting… or is it just another frame size we have to learn to compose for?

Would you ever develop a project specifically for vertical? Or does cinema still need the horizontal canvas for you?

Hi, Lindsay Thompson. I think vertical storytelling is an incredible opportunity and here to stay! I prefer writing and watching horizontal movies and shows, but I’m outlining my first micro-drama.
