Composing for a Sex/Love Scene

I know it's a little bit of a cheeky subject, but I've been working on a feature recently that has unbelievable amounts of sex scenes and it got me thinking, 'how many love scenes have you composed in the past?' The answer is one. One love scene previously!

Love/sex scenes are peculiar because we get very little training or discussion about them, but they are intrinsic to many films and each one is very intimate and original.

I wondered how you guys approach scoring a love scene

Kerry Kennard

I have not yet done one.

What if the genre is a Western …

Does this before and after music affect the

Love making scene ?

Curious! Smiles !

Randall Scott White

Just loop "Take My Breath Away" knock offs and you're golden.

Kerry Kennard I suppose you could work with the similar orchestration and probably period and location would affect the music. It would be weird having 80s music in 1880s wild west. I should rewatch Westworld and get back to you on that

Ha ha Hannah Woolmer - there was less sex in film and TV - smiles

Yes - period music sound research is needed.

Some of my favorite love scene music comes from the original version of the steve mcqueen/fay dunaway film, "The Thomas Crown Affair". Music by Michel Legrand. Pay particular attention to the way the music develops in the 'chess scene'

Notice as the kissing goes on at the end and the camera starts to swirl and change colors, the tempo picks up and the music goes into 6/8 time. Its often about the tempo and time and rhythm and feeling to control the musical emotion and better sync with the emotion on screen.

When it comes to composing for intimate or love scenes, the music has to feel natural and not forced — too much and it becomes cheesy, too little and the mood is lost. That’s why I think inspiration often comes not only from films but also from real-life emotions and even the vibe of dating platforms. Sometimes exploring sites where people actually search for horny girls near me gives you a sense of rawness and authenticity that can be translated into sound. For example, some sites show how much atmosphere and desire matter — and music works the same way. The key is subtle tension, rhythm, and leaving space for emotion to breathe.

David Laguillo

just use the Shhh-Ahhh from Harry Manfredini´s Friday 13th score but without strings, obviously.

Hannah Woolmer

David Laguillo hahahaha

Libby Wright

Hmmm... that's one I've never composed for. Seems like most of those scenes are instrumental. Why do you think that is?

Joel Irwin

imho because words being sung or spoken in a love scene would detract from the action of the scene. Though I am sure there are many scenes in particular love scenes that act as final scenes that are "outro scenes" to the end titles.
