Composing : Growing as a Songwriter by Wyman Brent

Growing as a Songwriter

Back in April, I didn’t even know I had this ability in me. Then came What the Mack? — the playful little song that opened the door to an entire creative world. Since then, I’ve been writing every single day, and the songs just keep flowing.

At first, most of them leaned into humor and quirkiness (Yay Yay Yo, Robots on the Floor). Lately, though, I’ve surprised myself by branching out into deeper emotions and different vibes: heartbreak (Thanks for Asking), tenderness (What’s Your Story), reflective warmth (A Smile on Her Face), and even something that feels like it could have belonged on a Mountain, Three Dog Night, or Canned Heat album (Gotta Walk the Dog).

I can honestly say I feel myself growing and evolving as a songwriter. It stuns me to realize that the same creative spark that gave me What the Mack? is now stretching across so many styles and moods.

I’d love to hear from others: have you ever had a project that started small and playful, only to reveal a much bigger path of growth you didn’t expect?
